Casters require a dedicated lubricant to prevent sticking, corrosion, and material degradation.
Bearing casters (most common):
Ball/needle bearings (PU/rubber/nylon wheels): Lithium-based grease is recommended. It offers a wide temperature range (-20°C to 120°C), strong adhesion, rust and dust resistance, and does not corrode the metal/wheel body. Apply to the bearing gaps and allow to penetrate. Reapply lubricant every 1-2 months.
Precision bearings (such as those for silent chairs): Silicone oil (low viscosity) is recommended. It is odorless, quiet, and does not stain the wheel body or floor.
Bearingless sleeve casters (lightweight and low-cost):
Plastic/metal sleeves: Motor oil or sewing machine oil (low viscosity) is recommended. It has good fluidity, penetrates gaps, reduces dry friction, and is low-cost. Reapply lubricant every 2-3 weeks. Avoid thick greases (which tend to attract dust).
Special Material Considerations:
Rubber/PU Wheels: ❗Mineral oil-based and sulfur- or chlorine-containing lubricants are prohibited (causing swelling, aging, and cracking). Safe choices: Lithium-based grease or silicone oil.
Stainless steel brackets (humid environments): Rust-resistant grease (containing zinc or molybdenum) is recommended. It lubricates and prevents rust, suitable for kitchens and bathrooms.
Additional Scenario Information:
Quiet Environments (Bedroom/Study): Silicone oil or food-grade grease (odorless) is preferred.
Outdoors/Balconies (dust and rain): Extreme-pressure lithium-based grease is preferred (water and dust resistant, strong adhesion).
Core Principles:
Avoid "universal" lubricants and strictly observe the compatibility of the lubricant with the wheel material (mineral oil is not recommended for rubber/PU).
Select lubricant based on bearing type (ball bearing/sleeve) and application (quiet, humid, outdoor).
Lubricate at the recommended frequency to ensure effectiveness and extend life.
