Safety standards for brake casters include both international and domestic standards, as follows:

International Standards:

EN 12530: European technical standard for manually operated push-pull casters and rollers. This standard applies to carts, equipment, and other mobile devices used in public spaces such as shopping malls, hospitals, and schools. It focuses on evaluating the caster's load capacity, durability, static and dynamic braking performance, and operational safety. For example, when testing the effectiveness of the braking and/or locking mechanism, it is required that when a horizontal pull is applied, the wheel must not exhibit any axial rotation, and the braking surface must not slip. There must not be more than 1° of wheel deflection or perceptible displacement of the braking mechanism.

ISO 22881: Standardizes the performance of casters and wheels used in manually operated propulsion devices for institutional applications. It specifies key test items for casters, such as dynamic load, static load, electrical resistance, and impact resistance. It also includes safety requirements such as fatigue testing of the braking and/or locking mechanisms to ensure the reliability and safety of the caster in real-world use.

ISO 22880: This standard specifies performance requirements for swivel chair casters, including surface quality, materials, and brakes. If a swivel chair is equipped with brakes, the wheels must be compatible with the brakes to ensure stability and safety.

Domestic Standards:

GB/T 14687-2011: This is a key Chinese standard for industrial casters, applicable to non-powered mobile wheels and casters for industrial vehicles and equipment. This standard specifies the terminology and definitions, model designation, basic parameters, technical requirements, test methods, and inspection rules for industrial casters, but does not cover casters for furniture, luggage, and other applications.

T/ZSJL003-2021: This standard, proposed and coordinated by the Zhongshan Caster Industry Association, covers brake effectiveness testing for casters with brakes, including both wheel brakes and movable brakes. This standard specifies the brake test requirements for different types of casters under corresponding load forces. For example, industrial casters with a speed of ≤4km/h must withstand a horizontal traction force of 15% of the load force L1 and the single wheel should not rotate around the axis.
