Which is more suitable for the food industry, TPE casters or rubber casters?

In food industry applications (such as food processing workshops, food storage, and catering equipment movement), the focus is on caster hygiene and safety, ease of cleaning, floor protection, and environmental resistance. Overall, TPE casters are significantly superior to rubber casters. The specific differences are as follows:

1. Core Advantage: Hygiene and safety far surpass those of rubber casters.
The food industry has extremely high requirements for materials that "leak no harmful substances," which is the core competitive advantage of TPE casters:

TPE material: It is inherently halogen-free and heavy metal-free. Its production does not require a vulcanization process (vulcanization of rubber can easily leave harmful residues such as sulfur and accelerators). It meets US FDA food contact standards and EU ROHS environmental certifications. Even after long-term use or contact with food debris or food-grade detergents, no toxic substances are released, causing no contamination to food or the production environment. It fully complies with food industry hygiene regulations and can be used directly in equipment with indirect food contact, such as food transfer vehicles and mobile food processing workbenches.

Rubber Material: Traditional rubber (such as natural rubber and nitrile rubber) requires the addition of additives such as vulcanizers and antioxidants during production. Some of these additives may pose a risk of trace migration. Rubber is also prone to leach substances such as carbon black and sulfur. Long-term use in food production facilities can contaminate floors or food ingredients, making it difficult to meet the strict hygiene standards of the food industry. Only a very limited number of special food-grade rubbers (which are extremely expensive) are adequate, while ordinary rubber casters are completely unsuitable.

2. Auxiliary Advantages: Cleanliness and Environmental Compatibility Better Meet the Needs of the Food Industry

In addition to hygiene and safety, the frequent cleaning and smooth floor conditions of the food industry further enhance the advantages of TPE casters:

Cleanability: Food production facilities require regular cleaning of equipment and floors with high-pressure water jets and food-grade disinfectants (such as peracetic acid and neutral detergents). TPE's smooth, non-porous surface resists grease and food residue, requiring only a simple wipe or rinse for cleaning. It's also resistant to common disinfectants and won't age with frequent cleaning. Rubber, on the other hand, easily harbors dirt and grime, and some rubbers are not resistant to strong detergents. Long-term cleaning can lead to cracking and deformation, increasing cleaning difficulty and maintenance costs.

Floor protection and slip resistance: Food production facilities often use smooth floors like epoxy and ceramic tiles. Casters must be both scratch-resistant (to prevent dirt and grime from accumulating and causing hygiene problems) and slip-resistant to prevent equipment from sliding. TPE is soft and elastic, ensuring it won't scratch the floor. Its moderate coefficient of friction ensures excellent slip resistance even when the floor is slightly damp (such as residual water stains after cleaning). Rubber casters, especially hard industrial rubber casters, are prone to scratching, and some soft rubber casters can slip on damp surfaces.

3. Conclusion: TPE Casters Are the Optimal Solution for the Food Industry
Taking into account the three core requirements of "hygiene and safety, easy cleaning, and floor compatibility," TPE casters perfectly meet the specific needs of the food industry. They not only avoid the risk of harmful substance leachate from rubber casters, but also reduce cleaning and maintenance costs, protecting the production environment. Rubber casters (except for special, high-priced food-grade rubber) lack hygiene and safety, are difficult to clean, and therefore fail to meet the basic requirements of the food industry. Therefore, the food industry should prioritize TPE casters over standard rubber casters.
