The service life of polyurethane casters: A variable range affected by usage and maintenance
There's no fixed standard for the service life of polyurethane casters. It depends on three key factors: usage scenario, load load, and maintenance frequency. Under normal conditions, the service life is generally 1-5 years. Under extreme conditions, it can be shortened to 3 months or extended to 8 years. Specifically, it can be categorized by usage scenario:
Indoor environments with normal temperature and low wear have the longest service life. Examples include office document carts and home furniture casters. These environments have flat floors (ceiling tiles/wooden floors), light loads (single caster load <50kg), short daily rolling distances (<1km), and are not susceptible to corrosion or high temperatures. With regular cleaning, the service life can reach 3-5 years, and some properly maintained products can even exceed 5 years.
In industrial environments with high-frequency use, the service life is intermediate. Component transfer carts in electronics factories and light-duty warehouse rack carts are often operated on concrete floors. A single caster can bear a load of 100-300kg and cover a daily mileage of 3-8km. While some wear and tear is expected, without extreme environmental interference, if the bearings are lubricated and the tread is cleaned of debris every 3-6 months, the lifespan is typically 1.5-3 years. With more frequent use (such as in e-commerce sorting centers, with daily mileage exceeding 10km), the lifespan is shortened to 1-1.5 years.
Harsh or inappropriate operating conditions significantly shorten the lifespan. Use on rough, gravelly surfaces, in oily workshops, or subject to prolonged overload (e.g., a 300kg-rated caster carrying 500kg), or frequent impact (such as repeated climbing stairs) accelerates tread wear and hub deformation, potentially reducing the lifespan to just 3-6 months. Prolonged use in high temperatures (>80°C) or extremely cold (<-30°C) accelerates material aging, shortening the lifespan to 6-12 months.
Maintenance frequency can increase lifespan by 1-2 times. In the same scenario, casters that regularly clean the tread, lubricate the bearings, and avoid overloading can extend their lifespan by 50%-100% compared to casters that are not maintained and subjected to heavy use. For example, in an industrial workshop, a properly maintained polyurethane caster can last 2.5 years, while the same model that is neglected may need replacement after only 1.5 years.
