How to maintain TPE casters to extend their lifespan?

Maintenance of TPE casters should take into account the material's properties of elasticity, easy dirt collection, and resistance to extreme environments. Focusing on the three key areas of cleaning, component maintenance, and environmental avoidance, regular, targeted maintenance can reduce abnormal wear and tear. Specific maintenance methods are as follows:
1. Regular Cleaning: Remove impurities and reduce friction and wear.
TPE wheel treads are susceptible to accumulation of hard impurities such as dust and sand. Long-term residue can scratch the wheel tread and increase rolling resistance, requiring regular cleaning:
Wheel tread cleaning: Wipe the wheel surface weekly with a damp cloth. If greasy dirt (such as cooking oil from food processing plants or coffee stains from office environments) is present, use a neutral detergent (such as diluted dishwashing liquid). Avoid using strong acids or alkalines to prevent corrosion of the TPE surface. After cleaning, wipe dry with a dry cloth to prevent moisture from penetrating the wheel axle and causing rust.
Axle and Bracket Cleaning: Check the axle gap every two weeks and use a fine-bristled brush (such as a toothbrush) to remove dust, hair, and other debris from the gap to prevent it from getting stuck and causing rotation problems. If the axle is heavily dusted, blow out the debris with compressed air before proceeding with cleaning.
2. Component Maintenance: Ensure smooth rotation and prevent structural damage.
The lifespan of TPE casters is directly related to the condition of auxiliary components such as the axle and bracket, requiring key maintenance:
Axle Lubrication: Add two to three drops of neutral lubricant (such as a silicone-based lubricant; corrosive greases such as motor oil are prohibited) to the axle every one to two months. After lubrication, rotate the caster 10 to 20 times to ensure even distribution of the lubricant and reduce friction and wear between the axle and bearing. If the axle makes unusual noises or stops during rotation, inspect it for any stuck debris, clean it, and then relubricate it.
Bracket and Connection Inspection: Check the caster bracket monthly for looseness or deformation. Use a wrench to tighten the screws connecting the bracket to the equipment (to prevent long-term vibration from loosening the screws and causing the wheel to tilt). If the bracket is slightly deformed, correct it immediately (you can use pliers to gently straighten it). If it is severely deformed, replace the bracket to prevent uneven force on the wheel and further wear of the TPE wheel surface.
Brake Maintenance (if installed): Test the brake sensitivity every two weeks. If the caster still slips slightly when braking, check the brake pads for wear. If the pad surface is smooth or has obvious indentations, replace the pads immediately. Also, clean the contact area between the brake pad and the wheel surface to remove impurities to prevent them from affecting braking performance and indirectly causing wheel wear.
3. Environmental and Usage Precautions: Minimize Wear in Extreme Conditions
TPE material is sensitive to high temperatures, strong corrosion, and excessive loads. Therefore, avoid these conditions during daily use:
Avoid extreme environments: TPE casters should not be exposed to high temperatures for extended periods (e.g., near ovens or heaters, temperatures not exceeding 125°C) to prevent softening and deformation of the wheel body. If contact with highly corrosive substances (such as concentrated acid or gasoline) occurs, immediately rinse the wheel surface with clean water and dry it to prevent swelling and cracking. Avoid prolonged immersion in water (although TPE is water-resistant, the axle is susceptible to rust).
Control load and usage: Use the caster strictly within its rated load capacity and avoid overloading (it's recommended to allow a 20%-30% load margin. For example, for a caster rated for 100kg, the actual load should not exceed 80kg). This prevents the TPE wheel from being permanently dented due to prolonged pressure. Avoid forcible pushing or pulling when moving equipment. If you encounter obstacles (such as thresholds or small stones), clear them before moving. Do not forcefully drag the equipment, which may scratch the wheel surface or break the bracket.
Long-term storage: If the caster is not used for an extended period (such as seasonally idle equipment), elevate the equipment (using a support bracket to prevent the wheel from prolonged pressure and deformation). Store in a dry, well-ventilated environment between 5°C and 30°C, away from direct sunlight (ultraviolet rays accelerate TPE aging, causing the wheel surface to become hard and brittle) and away from chemicals.
Clean the wheel and apply a small amount of lubricant to protect the axle before storage. The above maintenance measures can effectively reduce abnormal wear of TPE casters, usually extending their service life by 30%-50%, while ensuring safety and smooth rolling during use.
