When cleaning furniture casters, choose the right cleaning agent based on the wheel material. Improper use can cause corrosion, aging, or damage.
1. General-purpose plastic casters (such as PP, nylon, etc.)
These are the most common types. Use a neutral or slightly alkaline cleaning agent, such as a diluted dish soap solution. Avoid using strong acids, bases, or organic solvents (such as alcohol, acetone, and thinner). These chemicals can corrode the plastic surface, weakening it, making it brittle, or even cracking. Use a soft brush with cleaning solution, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
2. Rubber/Polyurethane (PU) Casters
These soft wheels are susceptible to dust and aging. Cleaning with clean water or soapy water is recommended. For stubborn stains, use a small amount of a specialized rubber care agent to clean and prevent cracking. Avoid using oils, solvents, or corrosive cleaning agents, as they can accelerate the hardening of the rubber and cause it to lose its elasticity.
3. Metal Brackets and Axles
For metal parts, rust removal and rust prevention are key. Household metal care cleaners can be used. If heavily greased, carburetor cleaner can be used for quick degreasing. However, wipe dry immediately after use and apply a light lubricant to prevent rust. Be careful not to splash the cleaner onto adjacent plastic parts.
4. Special Precautions
Brake Mechanism: When cleaning around the brake pads, always use a dry cloth and a small amount of clean water to ensure there is no detergent or oil residue, which can cause slippage and brake failure.
General Rule: Regardless of the material, dust the caster before cleaning (by dry brushing or vacuuming). After cleaning, be sure to dry the caster thoroughly to prevent moisture from entering the bearings and causing rust.
In Summary: Use a neutral detergent. Avoid solvents for plastic wheels and oils for rubber wheels. Prevent rust on metal and keep the brake area dry. Gentle cleaning methods maximize the life of the caster.
